NIETZSCHE CAFE, AXEL’S CHARHOUSE MORE SECRET HISTORIES
SYNOPSIS
Nietzsche’s Cafe, Axel’s Charhouse is volume three of a collection of short short stories
beginning with Borges’ Travel, Hemingway’s Garage and followed by Balzac’s Coffee,
DaVinci’s Ristorante are devoted to the relationship between writers/artists and commerce.
Many writers/artists have often struggled with the conflict between earning a living and
creating whatever was their raison d’être whether that was writing, painting, composing,
etc. What Nietzsche’ Cafe, Axel’s Charhouse does is create stories around businesses (all
of which exist or did exist) based on the names of these writers/artists who, desperate to
keep their art alive, resorted to opening businesses in order to make a living; hence,
businesses such as Nietzsche’s Cafe or Hotel Balzac or Baudelaire Soaps or Cervantes
Cigars. Though seemingly “tongue in cheek,” the true story of how these writers/artists
suffered would be hard to fictionalize.
